Languedoc is, together with Aquitaine, the great region of French naturism: the Cap d'Agde naturist village, the largest in Europe, the beaches of Hérault and Aude, the Cèze gorges in the Gard and, behind the coast, a hinterland of garrigue and vineyards where cottages with pools lend themselves naturally to nude living. What sets the region apart is the variety of formulas: you can rent a studio in the naturist quarter just as easily as a mobile home in a domain, a chalet by a lagoon or a private villa a few minutes from the sea.

The great naturist spots of Languedoc

Cap d'Agde (Hérault) remains the reference: an entire quarter — residences, harbour, shops, restaurants — where nudity is the norm, backed by roughly two kilometres of naturist beach. Twenty kilometres further west, Sérignan lines up a wild beach and a large naturist campsite right on the sand, Sérignan Plage Nature. Between the two, the naturist beach of Portiragnes attracts families. In the Aude, Le Clapotis, at La Palme, occupies a strip of land between lagoons and the Mediterranean. Finally, in the Gard, two historic domains share the Cèze gorges — La Sablière and La Genèse — for river, cliff and holm-oak naturism, and the great Espiguette beach at Le Grau-du-Roi has a recognised naturist zone.

Which formula to choose?

An apartment or studio at Cap d'Agde suits those who want everything on foot: beach, restaurants, entertainment. Hundreds of owners rent directly in the quarter's residences (Héliopolis, Port Nature, Port Ambonne…); expect a badge or access pass handed over with the keys. A mobile home, bungalow or chalet in a naturist domain is the family formula par excellence: pool, activities, beach five minutes away, and a weekly rate that is often gentler than the campsite's own when you rent from a private owner of the pitch. A cottage or private villa, around Agde, Marseillan, Pézenas or in the Minervois, offers total privacy: enclosed garden, pool, nudity everywhere. It is the choice of couples and groups of friends, like Villa PaulAna in Agde, which sleeps up to twelve, ten minutes from the naturist beach.

What to check before booking

Three points make the difference between a good and a bad stay. Access conditions: some domains require a French Naturist Federation licence (or sell one on site), others a simple ID; at Cap d'Agde, ask about the pass included in the rental. The clothing policy: nudity compulsory, recommended or clothing optional? In a private villa you decide; in a domain, the house rules apply. The spirit of the place: family, quiet, festive? The Cap d'Agde naturist quarter has a night-time reputation quite different from that of a Cévennes campsite — both have their public, but you need to pick yours. When to go, and at what price

The swimming season runs from May to September; June and September are the golden months: sea at 20-23 °C, quiet beaches, prices 30-50% below August. The wind (tramontane, sea breeze) blows mostly in spring. As a guide, a studio at Cap d'Agde rents for €50-120 per night, a mobile home in a domain €400-700 per week off season and €1,000-1,800 in August, a villa with pool €100-350 per night depending on capacity.
