Spain is the fastest-rising naturist destination in Europe, and for good reason: a climate that allows nude living ten months a year on the coast and all year in the Canaries, one of the most liberal legislations on the continent, and two urban naturist villages — Vera Playa and Costa Natura — with no equivalent elsewhere. Alongside the big resorts, an offer of villas, fincas and apartments rented directly by their owners has grown, from the Costa Blanca to inland Andalusia. That is the offer this guide favours.
Spain's great naturist destinations
Vera Playa (Almería) is Europe's only naturist urban area: several kilometres of residences, hotels and shops where people live nude right into the streets, along a long sandy beach. You can rent an apartment for a week or for the winter, or a room at the Vera Playa Club. Costa Natura, at Estepona (Málaga), is Spain's first naturist village: a complex of seafront apartments with a residential, family spirit. On the Andalusian coast, the beaches of Bolonia (Cádiz), Cantarriján (Granada) and Los Muertos (Almería) rank among the most beautiful naturist beaches in Europe. In Catalonia, El Templo del Sol (Tarragona) and Relax-Nat (Garrotxa) welcome campers and, more unusually, El Fonoll is an entire hinterland village devoted to naturism. In Murcia, El Portús occupies a cove near Cartagena. In the Balearics, Es Trenc (Majorca) and Es Cavallet (Ibiza) are classics. Finally, the Canaries — the Maspalomas dunes on Gran Canaria, the naturist village of Charco del Palo on Lanzarote, the endless beaches of Fuerteventura — are the winter refuge of northern Europe's naturists.
Villa, apartment, finca or campsite?
An apartment at Vera Playa or Costa Natura gives the complete naturist life — beach, pools, bars, promenades — at a reasonable price, and rents readily by the month off season. A private villa with pool is the ideal formula for a family or friends who want privacy: you find them mostly on the Costa Blanca, in the Valencia region and in inland Andalusia. The guide lists, for example, Casa Emrosi, a naturist villa for six on the Costa Blanca, or Finca Fabulosa at Álora, in the mountains behind Málaga. For a couple, a self-contained apartment with naturist hosts, like Casa MuchoMas at Montserrat near Valencia, combines a low price with a personal welcome. The naturist campsite, finally, remains the most economical gateway: pitches and bungalows in Catalonia, Murcia and Andalusia.
What the law says, and local customs
No national law prohibits nudity in Spain — which explains the multitude of "de facto" naturist beaches, often marked by a simple sign. A few municipalities have, however, passed bylaws limiting nudity away from the beaches; when in doubt, stay nude on the beach and in your rental, and dress for the village. Most Spanish naturist rentals are clothing optional: nudity is free, never imposed. Check on the listing whether the pool is private or shared with other guests, and whether the accommodation is exclusively naturist or mixed depending on the week — Travelia Naturiste states these points for every address.
When to go, and at what price
The season is long: from March-April to October-November on the Mediterranean and Andalusian coasts, all year in the Canaries. May-June and September-October are the perfect months — 25 to 30 °C, quiet beaches, low prices; July-August are hot (often over 35 °C inland) and more expensive. As a guide: €50-120 per night for an apartment at Vera Playa or Costa Natura, €100-300 per night for a villa with pool depending on capacity, €25-50 per night for a camping pitch, €70-150 for a bungalow.
